Have you ever read a picture book and marvel at how the text and image work perfectly together? Kerry Martin, art director at Holiday House, will give a presentation on how she matches the text with “the perfect imagery” to create visually stunning picture books.

You will learn how an art director creates a picture book, what they look for in an illustrator’s portfolio and possibly get the answer to that burning question in every writer’s mind:

“How many art notes is one too many in my PB manuscript?”

Based in Queens, NY Kerry Martin has been the director of art and design for Holiday House since September 2015. Kerry states, “My favorite part of my job is matching text with the perfect imagery; reviewing sketches; finding type, and holding the finished product in my hands.”

Prior to her current position, Kerry was the senior designer for Clarion Books, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, for twelve years.

Kerry’s job includes designing book jackets and creating the interiors for picture books, middle grade and teen novels, and illustrated nonfiction. She provides art direction to illustrators, photographers, and freelance designers—and seeks new talent!

Many of the books Kerry has worked on have won awards, such as Good Night Wind, a picture book written by Linda Elovitz Marshall and illustrated by Maelle Doliveux, which was a Bank Street Best Book of the Year and Adventures of a Girl Called Bicycle a novel by Christina Uss, jacket illustrated by Jonathan Bean, A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year and selected for the 2019-2020 Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List.

Last December, SCBWI Long Island had the honor of hosting Yuko Katakawa, author and illustrator of Let’s Scare Bear, a picture book that Kerry worked on with Yuko.
