On Friday, April 24, from 1-2:30, Carter Hasegawa of Candlewick Books will Zoom present “Hearing Voices” with us. Registration is $35 each. This is for SCBWI members only.

He will also do a limited number of critiques. We will accept them first come first served but no later than April 15.  Details below.

We’re always told that voice can’t be edited; it’s either there or it’s not. But what if I told you that there is indeed a toolbox we can refer to when establishing voice in our own works. In this workshop, we’re going to learn how to establish voice in the opening lines of your story. Using examples from published picture books and novels, we will look at how authors establish “voice” in varying yet successful ways. Please bring a current work in progress. This will be a hands-on and interactive workshop as best as we can with the format, so please be prepared to write and discuss.

Critique information from Carter:

“I will do critiques across all genres and age groups. Keep in mind that I’m primarily looking for strong, character-driven picture books, early readers, or middle-grade novels. I do occasionally work with longer nonfiction titles and some picture book biographies, as well as graphic novels and fiction for young adults. I love books that show us an experience or a feeling or some such in new and interesting ways. I’m not a big fan of rhyming stories, stories where animals are the characters, stories where the aim is to instruct, and overly sentimental or jokey stories.”

You may send 1 complete picture book manuscript or up to ten pages of a novel (chapter book, MG, YA, graphic) for consideration.

All submissions shall be 12 point, Times Roman, Double spaced.

You may not include more than 1 picture book because they are in fact more difficult to critique than a novel even if they are short. Please take note of Carter’s critique notes above.

The critiques are $50 each. We will send you a PayPal invoice if your manuscript is accepted for critique.

Carter Hasegawa will celebrate his 10th anniversary at Candlewick Press this summer. He also works part-time as a photographer with Long River Photo and as a bookseller at Porter Square Books in Cambridge, MA. Some of his favorite, non-Candlewick books include: The Notorious Benedict Arnold; Jellicoe Road; Clementine; Ender’s Game; Three Times Lucky; Imogene’s Antlers; the Elephant & Piggie books; George and Martha; Good Night, Gorilla; Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes; and many, MANY others. Basically anything that has a great voice, is a good story, and is “unputdownable.” He lives in Boston with his wife and soon-to-be-born son.
