Message from Lisa Anchin – Illustrator Coordinator NYMetro
I hope 2018 is treating all of you well!
Pat Cummings and I launched a new program in Brooklyn in the fall of 2017 and are currently setting our 2018 calendar. The program is designed to help our PAL members.
BACK2BACK is a new SCBWI partnered program that will help newly published author/illustrators gain confidence while speaking to audiences of children. The program pairs a veteran in the field with a newly published author/illustrator for a joint speaking event. After a public program—presentation and book signing—at Books are Magic, a new bookstore in downtown Brooklyn, the pro and newbie have the opportunity to talk about their presentations, with the veteran offering a critique and tips.
Right now we have quite a few local vets who are ready to participate, but we’re seeking newly PAL SCBWI members for the 2018 lineup. Because the audience for these programs skews young, we’re only looking for picture book authors and Illustrators right now. At some point we hope to expand to include middle grade and YA folks as well. The other parameters for newbies–because we are partnering with a bookshop–is that newbie participants can only have published 1-3 titles, and at least 1 must be with a traditional publisher. And of course folks would have to be willing to travel to Brooklyn because all events are at Books Are Magic.
